A biography of the President of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) was released today.
A book launch event was held on campus, where media reporters were invited to have a face to face conversation with Professor Yang Fujia, particularly about the biography and his thoughts on current educational topics. Also at the event, a few books were given to the university library as a gift.
Entitled A Biography of Yang Fujia, the book details the life and educational philosophies of Professor Yang, China’s foremost physicist and educationist.
Set against the epic backdrop of China’s revolutionary movements since the late 1900s, this book unfolds Professor Yang’s life journey from his early days to his experience at the University of Nottingham as the University Chancellor, and his recent educational achievements, including establishing UNNC.
Professor Yang Fujia is the founding President of UNNC, the very first Sino-foreign University in China. He was the University of Nottingham’s sixth Chancellor and the first Chinese academic to hold the position at a UK university.
Professor Yang has been a leading advocate for liberal arts education, a concept he has put into practice at UNNC since its very beginning. He believes that the mind is not a vessel to be filled but a flame to be kindled. Thinking at UNNC and for the region, Professor Yang has been working on clarifying what a liberal arts perspective can offer China’s higher education.
In 2013, he set up the Dream Scholarship to encourage students to work hard for their dreams, especially in developing extracurricular activities. He believes that extracurricular activities, whether in the form of social service or research project, are as important as course curricula in unlocking students’ potential and transforming their lives.
At the event, the Dream Scholarship awarding ceremony was held in conjunction. 24 students and multiple student societies, who have won the Dream Scholarship this year, were presented the scholarship certificates and the new book by Professor Yang.
